Northern Italy Rail Tour Itinerary
Your Northern Italy adventure begins today.
Upon arrival at Milan Malpensa Airport, settle in at your comfortable hotel and get ready for an unforgettable journey through Italy’s lakes, mountains, medieval villages, culinary traditions, and hidden treasures.
Accommodation: Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport Hotel (or comparable lodging).

After breakfast, at 8:30 AM, we meet our tour guide for a welcome briefing, where we receive an overview of the journey ahead and important travel information.
Our Northern Italy adventure begins as we travel through the beautiful Italian countryside, experiencing the region much as locals do.
We make our way toward the elegant shores of Lago Maggiore, where sparkling blue waters meet grand Belle Époque villas and snow-capped Alpine peaks.
Before crossing the lake, we enjoy a traditional Italian lunch in Arona, a charming lakeside town overlooking the southern end of Lago Maggiore.
After lunch, we board a scenic ferry across the lake to one of Northern Italy’s best-kept secrets—Santa Caterina del Sasso. Clinging dramatically to a sheer cliff above the water, this centuries-old monastery feels wonderfully removed from the modern world.
During our guided visit, we discover the monastery’s remarkable history and architecture while enjoying panoramic views across Lago Maggiore.
We then continue by boat to the elegant lakeside town of Stresa.
The afternoon is ours to wander along the promenade, browse local boutiques, or simply relax with an espresso while taking in the spectacular lake and Alpine scenery.
Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch.
Accommodation: Hotel Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees (or comparable lodging).
Today we discover the jewels of Lago Maggiore.
Our first stop is the spectacular Isola Bella, home to one of Italy’s most impressive Baroque palaces. During our guided visit, we explore lavish royal apartments before wandering through the famous terraced gardens, where elegant white peacocks roam freely against the backdrop of the lake.
A short ferry ride brings us to picturesque Isola Superiore, the only inhabited island of the archipelago. Here we enjoy a leisurely lunch in its charming fishing village.
The afternoon belongs to tranquil Isola Madre, where exotic botanical gardens and a beautiful lakeside villa create a peaceful oasis to explore at our own pace with an audio guide.
By late afternoon, we return to Stresa after an unforgettable day on the lake.
Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch.
Accommodation: Hotel Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees (or comparable lodging).
Leaving the lakes behind, we journey through Northern Italy to sophisticated Turin.
Known as Italy’s first capital, Turin surprises visitors with grand piazzas, elegant arcades, historic cafés, and magnificent architecture.
Our highlight is the iconic Mole Antonelliana, where a panoramic elevator carries us high above the city. From the observation platform, breathtaking views stretch across Turin to the snow-capped Alps beyond.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy this elegant city before we gather for dinner.
Meals Included: Breakfast, & Dinner.
Accommodation: Turin Palace Hotel (or comparable lodging).

Today we venture into the beautiful Aosta Valley, surrounded by some of Europe’s highest mountains.
Often overlooked by visitors, Aosta is one of Italy’s hidden gems, boasting remarkably preserved Roman monuments within a charming Alpine town.
Together we stroll through nearly two thousand years of history, discovering the Arch of Augustus, Porta Praetoria, the Roman Theatre, the fascinating Cryptoporticus, medieval churches, and lively Piazza Émile Chanoux.
Lunch introduces us to authentic mountain cuisine with the regional favourite Crespella alla Valdostana, a delicious crêpe filled with local ham and cheese.
Back in Turin, enjoy free time to discover the city’s famous chocolate boutiques or simply soak up its elegant atmosphere.
Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch.
Accommodation: Turin Palace Hotel (or comparable lodging).
Today the scenery transforms completely as we journey from the foothills of the Alps to the sparkling Mediterranean.
Travelling the local way allows us to appreciate Northern Italy’s remarkable diversity. Vineyards give way to olive groves, mountains gradually become colourful coastal villages, and before long we arrive in the welcoming seaside town of Levanto.
There’s time to enjoy the beach, stroll through the historic centre, or simply embrace the relaxed rhythm of the Italian Riviera.
This evening we join local cooks for an authentic pesto-making workshop. Using fresh Ligurian basil, fragrant olive oil, pine nuts and Parmesan, we prepare one of Italy’s most famous recipes before sitting down to enjoy the meal together.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel Palazzo Vannoni (or comparable lodging).
Rather than rushing through Cinque Terre, we explore it the way it was designed to be experienced.
The local railway hugs the dramatic coastline, linking colourful fishing villages that cling to steep cliffs above the Mediterranean. It’s one of Europe’s most spectacular rail journeys and an effortless, sustainable way to discover this UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
We begin in Vernazza, where colourful houses surround a tiny natural harbour and narrow lanes invite us to wander at an unhurried pace.
Later we continue to Riomaggiore, another iconic village where brightly painted homes tumble towards the sea. As evening approaches, we enjoy dinner overlooking the coastline before returning to Levanto.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner.
Accommodation:
Hotel Palazzo Vannoni (or comparable lodging).
Today we journey from the Ligurian coast into the heart of Emilia-Romagna, combining one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks with its world-renowned culinary capital.
Our first stop is Pisa, home to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Standing in the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli, we admire this architectural masterpiece alongside the striking Cathedral and Baptistery—three of Italy’s most celebrated monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Continuing through the rolling landscapes of Tuscany, we arrive in Bologna, a city affectionately known as La Grassa (“The Fat One”) for its extraordinary food culture.
Beyond its culinary reputation, Bologna enchants with its beautifully preserved medieval centre, elegant piazzas, vibrant atmosphere, and over 60 kilometres (37 miles) of historic arcades—the longest continuous porticoes in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Enjoy some free time to wander the lively streets, browse local food shops, or relax with an aperitivo before we gather for dinner in one of the city’s historic restaurants, where we’ll enjoy the authentic flavours that have made Bologna famous across the globe.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner.
Accommodation: Royal Hotel Carlton (or comparable lodging).
Today’s journey takes us well beyond the traditional tourist trail.
Hidden among the hills of Emilia-Romagna lies the extraordinary Rocchetta Mattei, one of Italy’s most fascinating castles.
During our guided visit, we discover an architectural masterpiece blending Gothic, Moorish, Medieval, and Arabian influences into a truly magical setting.
Back in Bologna, we become Italian chefs ourselves.
Under expert guidance, we prepare fresh handmade pasta, authentic Bolognese ragù, traditional local specialities, and classic tiramisù before sitting down to enjoy the delicious meal we’ve created together.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner.
Accommodation: Royal Hotel Carlton (or comparable lodging).
Today we leave Bologna behind and journey to the sparkling shores of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, where vineyard-covered hills meet crystal-clear waters and charming lakeside towns.
Our highlight is a visit to the renowned Ca Maiol Winery, nestled in the heart of the Lugana wine region. During a guided tour, we stroll through the vineyards and discover how the area’s unique microclimate and fertile soils produce some of Italy’s finest white wines.
We then enjoy a tasting of four carefully selected wines, perfectly paired with local delicacies, while learning about the traditions that have shaped winemaking here for generations.
Later, we return to the elegant lakeside town of Desenzano del Garda. With its lively harbour, colourful promenade, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, there’s time to enjoy a leisurely stroll before gathering for dinner overlooking one of Italy’s most beautiful lakes.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Mayer & Splendid (or comparable lodging).
Today we discover Lake Garda from both the water and the mountains, experiencing some of Northern Italy’s most spectacular scenery.
A scenic ferry cruise takes us across the lake to the charming medieval town of Malcesine, nestled beneath the towering slopes of Monte Baldo.
Here, we board the panoramic cable car that glides high above olive groves and forests to the summit, where breathtaking views stretch across the sparkling waters of Lake Garda, the surrounding Alps, and the rolling countryside beyond.
There’s time to soak in the scenery, take photos, or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air.
Back at the lake, we continue by ferry to the enchanting peninsula of Sirmione.
Surrounded by crystal-clear water, this picturesque town is known for its narrow cobbled streets, lively piazzas, elegant lakeside atmosphere, and the impressive Scaliger Castle, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval fortresses.
Enjoy free time to explore, browse the local boutiques, or relax with a gelato by the waterfront before we cruise back to Desenzano for our final dinner on Lake Garda.
Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Mayer & Splendid (or comparable lodging).
Our final full day is spent in one of Italy’s most romantic cities.
In Verona, we step inside the remarkably preserved Roman Arena before visiting the famous Juliet’s House, where Shakespeare’s legendary love story continues to inspire visitors from around the world.
Following time to explore Verona’s elegant piazzas and charming streets, we gather for a memorable farewell lunch, celebrating an incredible journey through Northern Italy.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Italy. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted, while American Express is accepted at many larger hotels, restaurants and shops but may not be accepted by smaller businesses. Italy is increasingly cashless, with contactless card payments and mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay widely available, especially in cities and tourist areas. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to carry a small amount of cash in euros for smaller purchases or places that may not accept cards. Euros can be obtained from ATMs, banks and currency-exchange offices, although exchange rates and fees can vary.
Reasonable Fitness Required
This is a tour based solely on public transportation. Bear in mind that, apart from optional walks and hikes, you’ll be accompanied by your guide, but you should be comfortable walking independently when commuting from the train station to the hotel, between the hotel and restaurants, and from one activity to the next. Such commute routes take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.
The amount and intensity of walking every day vary throughout the trip. It’s safe to say that you will walk anywhere between 5,000 to 12,000 steps a day (40 minutes to 2,5 hours).
We make several train connections, or move from train to bus or boat, each day. This means you will be walking up and down train platform stairs or ramps to make the connection platform changes. These connection times can range from 7 to 15 minutes and are usually close to another, so a regular walk pace is all that’s needed.
Sometimes our reserved seats are on the end of a long train and sometimes we only know where our reserved seats are when the train arrives so then we need to walk briskly to enter the respective car.
Although this is a Rail Tour, a reasonable walking fitness is required to fully enjoy the splendour of Italy.
