This Post-Tour 8 Day Train Tour Lucerne has been designed to complement your 8-day Grand Train Tour of Switzerland. Extend your stay to experience the scenic city of Lucerne and explore it’s two famous mountains, Rigi and Pilatus.

Today we leave the Italian part of Switzerland and head north through the original Gotthard tunnel, built in 1882. It connects the North Sea with the Mediterranean, facilitating the movement of goods and people between northern and southern Europe.

We should arrive in Fluelen before 12. Here we will board a 100-year-old steam ship for a two-hour cruise. We will glide across Lake Lucerne, past mystical bays and picturesque landscapes while enjoying a delicious lunch.

Along the way we will pass many sites steeped in Swiss history, including the Rütli meadow where Switzerland was founded in 1291, the Schiller Stone and Tell’s Chapel.

Upon arrival in Lucerne around 3 p.m. you will follow the group to the train station. Here, the guide will explain you the way to the hotel, which will be up to 5 min walking distance from the train station. You will get to the hotel by yourself.

You will enjoy a free afternoon and evening. Your guide will be happy to suggest things to do and places to eat and drink.

Experience a unique combination of a train, gondola, cogwheel train and lake cruise for a truly adventurous day. Ascend the home mountain of Lucerne, Rigi, with the oldest cogwheel train in Europe, and enjoy a fantastic view of the Lake Lucerne. Upon your wish, ideas for flexible gentle walks will be provided.  From the top of Rigi, you will descend to Rigi Kaltbad where you will take a gondola to Weggis. Here you will board a ship direction Lucerne.

Your guide will escort you to the hotel or point other places of interest. The guide will also be happy to suggest the best places for food and drink in Lucerne.

Bear in mind that the guide will not assist you on the way to Zurich Airport. Travel time from Lucerne Main station to Zurich Kloten (Zurich Airport) is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Make sure that you schedule you return flights accordingly.

Visa, Maestro, and Mastercard are commonly accepted in Switzerland. American Express is not so popular and many businesses don’t accept it. The country is becoming more and more cashless with contactless and mobile payments (Google and Apple Pay). Still, it’s useful to have some cash on you while travelling. All banks provide currency exchange services at a favorable rate.

Moderate Fitness Required

This trip is based on public transport and you require moderate physical fitness to be able to change the platforms, stops and trains in time.

Walking on unpaved roads can be expected when visiting Pilatus and Rigi. the length and difficulty of thr walks will be adjusted to the preferences and fitness level of the participants.

Stairs, ramps, and other obstacles should be expected. You should be able to walk about 5000 to 7000 steps a day.
