The Ultimate Packing List
What Essentials Should Be on Your Pre-Departure Checklist?
We know you’re super excited about your upcoming trip to Switzerland. But before you start packing, there are a few things you’ll want to get to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.
In our ultimate Switzerland essential pre-departure checklist, rest assured you won’t forget any important document or tool that could make a real difference in your overall experience.
Let’s get down to it.
Which Travel Documents Do You Need?
Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, so if you’re coming from outside Europe, check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay. If you need a visa, apply well in advance.
Enough blank pages? Some countries require you to have at least 4 blank pages. If you’re a frequent international flyer, your passport may be used up before it expires.
A new passport typically takes 6-8 weeks.
Other important documents or copies to remember:
- Photocopies of your passport and a couple of passport-type photos.
- Plane tickets.
- Driver’s license.
- Insurance card.
- List of contacts for health or travel insurance.
NB: All your travel documents will be securely stored in our travel app, ensuring you always have them at your fingertips.
Is Travel Insurance An Essential?
We get it – no one likes to think about worst-case scenarios when planning an epic trip. But trust us, travel insurance is a must-have for peace of mind. Switzerland is known for its world-class healthcare, but medical expenses here can be steep. A solid travel insurance policy should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and even adventure activities.

Are You Bringing the Right Medications for Your Trip?
While Switzerland’s pharmacies are well-stocked and pharmacists are incredibly knowledgeable, it’s always best to bring your essentials – especially for prescriptions.
Pack enough medication for your entire trip, plus a little extra, just in case of unexpected delays. Pack prescription medication in your carry-on rather than check-in luggage. Keep everything in its original packaging and carry a copy of your prescription if you’re bringing any controlled substances. If you have allergies or medical conditions, consider bringing a translated note explaining your needs, just to be safe.
NB: Some medicine requires a special form to be brought into the Schengen area. Check with your doctor if that’s the case. You can find further information here: Illegal drug imports

PS If you ever need medical assistance, Switzerland is known for top-tier medical care, and you’ll have access to English-speaking doctors in every location along your journey.
Tech and gadgets: stay connected and capture the views
Switzerland uses Type J electrical outlets (230V), so if you’re traveling from the US, UK, or other non-European countries, bring a universal travel adapter. Wi-Fi is widely available, but train rides can be long, so consider downloading maps and travel guides in advance.
Other tech must-haves:
- A portable power bank
- A good-quality camera or smartphone with extra storage for stunning landscape shots
- Offline maps or the SBB Mobile app for train schedules
- iPad/computer
- Reading materials: iPad or Kindle are a good alternative to paper books.
- Headphones/earbuds.
- Chargers and batteries. Bring each device’s charger, or look into getting a charger capable of charging multiple devices at once.
What’s the Best Way to Handle Money While Traveling to Switzerland?
Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), and while credit and debit cards are widely accepted, small businesses and mountain huts may only take cash. It’s best to withdraw some Swiss francs from an ATM upon arrival rather than exchanging currency at the airport, where rates are often higher.
Tipping isn’t required in Switzerland, as service charges are included in bills, but rounding up the total or leaving small change is appreciated.
Sustainable travel essentials
At ECHO Rails we care about the planet and our goal is to limit our impact on the territory as much as possible. We have a full list of tips to travel sustainably in Switzerland, but here are some sustainable essentials you could bring with you:
- Refillable water bottle (Swiss tap water is some of the purest in the world!)
- Lightweight tote bag (for shopping & eco-friendly travel)
- Reusable utensils (handy for train picnics)
Swiss Travel Pass
The Swiss Travel Pass is a must-have for seamless travel. It grants unlimited access to trains, boats, and buses across the country, plus free or entry to many museums. Most of our tours have the Swiss travel pass included, so keep a digital (better for the environment) copy of it, as ticket inspectors frequently check them onboard. Also, be sure to bring your passport with you since they may ask for proof of identity.
Whether you’re embarking on a scenic rail tour, hiking through the Swiss Alps, or heading on a ski vacation with us, have your essential Switzerland pre-departure checklist ready before you go.
See you in Switzerland!
